Meeting Dr. William Lane Craig at Rutgers University

Image
Dr. William Lane Craig is a philosopher, apologist, professor and theologian who frequently debates top atheists, defending the claim that belief in God is more reasonable than unbelief in God.   He is the founder of Reasonable Faith, a ministry dedicated to defending the faith of Christianity.   It is a place where critics and skeptics can find thoughtful answers to tough questions, and challenges Christians to come to a fuller understanding of their faith. I am a follower of William Lane Craig in the sense that I am always listening and reading his work, and was fortunate enough to meet him at his lecture on The Existence of God and the Beginning of the Universe at Rutgers University.   The next day, we participated in a more personal Q&A with about 30 people present, where we were able to just pick his brain.   My friend Matt came all the way from Pittsburgh to hear this guy speak—we were pretty excited! COMPELLING QUESTIONS I’ve decided to ...

Let's Argue: The Resurrection

Image
We’ve been looking at several philosophical arguments for God’s existence.   These arguments show through the laws of logic that God is the best explanation for things like the cause of the universe and the existence of objective moral values and duties. This time we’re examining this claim: God is the best explanation for the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. DEFINE “JESUS” The historical figure known as Jesus of Nazareth had an unprecedented sense of divine authority.   He claimed to have lived a sinless life (John 8:46-47), that he was the only way to God (John 14:6), shared glory with God Himself (John 17:5), that He could forgive sins (Luke 5:20-21), and claimed to be able to give everlasting life (John 11:25) among many others.   These claims were not simply statements he made, but were backed up with miracles and exorcisms.   The chief of these divine acts was his resurrection of the dead. If Jesus truly rose from the dead, this is a di...

Let's Argue: The Moral Argument

Image
We’re looking at several philosophical arguments for God’s existence.  First we looked at the Cosmological Argument, showing that God is the best explanation for the cause of the universe.  Next we will look at the Moral Argument: God is the best explanation for the existence of objective moral values and duties. Remember what we said about argumentation: a “good” argument is a series of statements, or premises, that lead to a conclusion.   These premises must be logically sound (the conclusion follows the premises by the rules of logic), and its premises are true.   Along with this, it must be shown that there is good reason to believe that what this argument is stating is true. DEFINE THE TERMS First we need to define what we mean by “objective moral values and duties.” Objective as opposed to Subjective .   Objective means that they exist independent of opinions, belief systems, etc.   Subjective means they are dependent on these thin...
